Rhythm guitar is a basic form of playing where the guitar player strums chords in the background to a lead guitarists or lead singer. Some people like to play with a pick while others don't. This is completely up to you. If you find it uncomfortable to strum with your fingers, like myself, then use a pick.
If you have never used a guitar pick before, then you will want to know how to hold it correctly. Holding it incorrectly can lead to developing a bad habit that can take a long while to remove. I know this from personal experience. I used to hold the pick wrong for years! It took me awhile to getting used to holding it the correct way.
To hold the pick correctly, place the larger part of the pick between your thumb and your index finger. Do not use two fingers to hold it. Also, you do not want your thumb to be tense. Hold it in a way where your thumb is relaxed and loose. The key to rhythm guitar playing is holding the pick in a relaxed and loose manner. You might occasionally drop the pick, but that is why we have a lot of picks.
