A smashed guitar from the late grunge rocker Kurt Cobain has been sold to an unidentified private collector for $100,000.

The guitar was used by Kurt throughout the 1993 Nirvana “In Utero” tour. On December 30, 1993 during the Nirvana concert at the L.A. Forum, Kurt smashes the guitar and then goes off to the side of the stage to get a drill from his guitar technician and proceeds to drill a hole into the bridge pickup on stage. Apparently, he was trying to impress Eddie Van Halen who was standing stage left! The drill hole can be seen in the place of the bridge pickup on the reverse of the guitar. Included with this lot is the actual drill Kurt used at the show!!! Kurt had a few Stratocasters that were used during the “In Utero” tour and at the end of each show and Kurt would do his Jimi Hendrix impersonation by smashing the guitar. After the show the guitar would be repaired and used by Kurt at another concert.
The guitar is currently not playable, but could easily be repaired to playable condition. The body is intact and is not broken, the neck has been replaced with a correct Fender Mexican Stratocaster neck from the early 1990’s. One pick up is missing where Kurt has drilled a hole through the guitar. The guitar is in fair condition showing scratches, dents and a lot of wear. The chips and scratches give the guitar incredible character and can be matched up with the pictures and video. Also included in the lot is a guitar pick Kurt used on tour.
